Until recently the major reason for investigating the nutrient content of the soil water below the crop root depth was to evaluate the loss of fertilizer nutrients and to estimate the loss of production or the need for more fertilizer to adjust for the losses. Th e increased concern about environmental quality has changed this emphasis to the study of nutrients and other contaminant s in soil water because of potential water pollution. Th e quantity of rainfall or drainage water and the permeability of the soil are key factors in the leaching of contaminant s from the soil.

In the United States, fertilizer use varies among states, regions, crops, and farming areas. About 40% of the plant nutrients used in the United States were applied to corn. Hay and pasture accounted for about 15% of the total nutrients used because of the large acreage involved. Cotton was the third highest user, accounting for about 8% of the plant nutrients consumed. Potatoes, fruits and nuts, vegetables, and sugar beets are among the crops on which the fertilizer use has been the highest.
