There are several factors that affect the occurrence of fishscale in an enamel application that involve sources of hydrogen. One factor is the level of adherence of the enamel to the steel. The greater is the adherence, the greater is the resistance to fishscale. Another factor is the number of bubbles in the enamel layer. Fewer bubbles generally mean more fishscale. The frit and the types of clay used determine the number of bubbles. A third factor is the enamel’s ability to chemically tie up the atomic hydrogen before it forms a gas as molecular hydrogen.
