Even then, I would never have followed through on this project without the backing and assistance of a number of friends and colleagues. At a very early stage, when I had doubts about the merits of editing the Bunche notes, I received encouragement from Belinda Bozzoli, Charles van Onselen, Colin Bundy, and Phil Bonner. Then, as I began researching Bunche's notes, I had to devote considerable time to annotating the hundreds of major and minor details that are mentioned in them. This meant drawing on resources from libraries and archives in South Africa, the United States, and Great Britain as well as calling on numerous contacts, who have tracked down obscure bits of information.

8 Her itinerary covered much of the same ground as Bunche's. At the time of her trip she was an anthropology student at the London School of Economics on her way to carry out fieldwork in Uganda. By the time she finally published her account almost a decade later, she was a leading participant in the Council on African Affairs, a left-of-center black activist group. From this perspective, she wove an explicit political message into her travel narrative. Bunche's research notes are also of interest because they provide us with a glimpse into the inner mind of one of the twentieth century's leading black personalities.

Then, as I began researching Bunche's notes, I had to devote considerable time to annotating the hundreds of major and minor details that are mentioned in them. This meant drawing on resources from libraries and archives in South Africa, the United States, and Great Britain as well as calling on numerous contacts, who have tracked down obscure bits of information. I have been taken off on all sorts of detours, but it has been a rewarding experience and I have had engaging exchanges with dozens of correspondents.
